These just apply to large trucks, right?

Couldn’t find an online version of ours, but they read:

NO ENGINE BRAKING

EXCEPT IN EMERGENCY

Does that mean I can’t heel toe downshift through the ‘hood, or am I okay because I don’t have a Jake Brake?

I’ve never thought about it NOT applying to just semi trucks, but then realized I have never heard otherwise. Its not something they covered in Driver’s Ed or in my test at the DMV, that’s for sure.

“Engine braking” here doesn’t mean just using engine drag, but applying the loud Jake Brake that vents compressed air from the cylinder and sounds like a jackhammer.

Although adding a Jake Brake system to your Civic would be pretty entertaining. Bet it would sound like a bunch of firecrackers going off.

The father of an ex of mine had a Jake Brake on his Dodge Ram 3500 with the Cummins. It was an 06 Mega Cab, single rear wheel, 4 wheel drive, with a 6-speed manual. I kind of wanted that truck. I still kind of do.

My grandparents lived in western Pennsylvania, and I used to hear those things all the time out on the Turnpike and on the mountain roads around their house.

In case anybody is wondering:

A “Jake Brake” is an engine compression release brake used especially for steep hill downgrades. The Jake Brake opens the exhaust valves when the piston is near top dead center (where ignition normally occurs). On the upstroke, the piston compresses the air in the cylinder to 1/15th its original volume, which creates drag on the engine. The Jacobs Engine Brake then releases the compressed air and the energy stored in it before it can push back on the piston during the down stroke. The Jake Brake turns a power producing engine into a power absorbing air compressor and in turn, causes the truck to slow down. Inside of the truck, the driver can choose how many cylinders to activate; the more cylinders activated, the more slowing of the truck. (wiki)

Yeah they tend not to use them here in town. In Prince George there is about a million logging trucks. On any trip on the highway I see at least 4 or 5. Hell I was sitting in the tire shop the other day and the traffic was logging truck, wood chip truck, logging truck lol.

When I was at Wyowreck, they had a straightpiped Cummins N14 with a Jake Brake that you could hear throughout the school. It was awesome.

Sitting in an ‘08 with 150k miles on it... It has not held up well.
